This CD definitely has the Maine vibe or that of any coastal area. I love the harmony. Saw Schooner Fare for the 1st time in December 2009 and fell in love with their sound.

Summary: "Good music you don't have be a Maine-ah to enjoy"
Who could not like Portland Town. Schooner Fare starts off Our Maine Songs, with a good ballad introducing you to the groups wonderful harmony style. Big House struck me that it should have been on their kids album. Good song, just the wrong place. Kingfisher is straight folk song and Scuttlebutt tends to grown on me for some reason. Leviathan is a grand song as the name implies and they almost put you out on the water, watching the whales. It grows wonderfully. Salt Water Farm is another for the kids CD. The refrain of Day of the Clipper is one of the rousing tunes you sing at every Schooner Fare concert. Quebecois, The Royal Tar, and Boats of Stone did nothing for me. Nice songs, just didn't smack of Maine. Fiddlers Green just kind of swings you into itself and tells it's story. The County Song took me back to Island Falls and many wonderful times with a couple of real "Mainers" My Dad...and his.

Summary: "If you love folk - this one is for you!"
I'll be brief. This is a truly great CD. Musically, you could not ask for better. The vocal quality is stunning; the instrumental work classic; the lyrics brilliant.
You don't have to be a Mainer to love this music, but if you are ... well, it just gets better and better. My wife is from "The County" and the CD's last song just made her light up in a huge smile. The County, for those who may not know, is Aroostook, the Crown of Maine, the northeastern-most part of the United States.
"Portland Town" is the group's signature song, but my personal Favorite on this CD is "Leviathan." There's not a bad track on the entire piece.
Tom Rowe has passed away, so the group now consists of the Romanoff brothers - Chuck and Steve. The three-part harmonies are no more, but they are still worth seeing in person if you get the chance!

Summary: "Folk Song Treasures"
"Schooner Fare is a true Maine treasure.
On this CD, you'll hear more than three fine musicians, you'll hear the essence of Maine and what makes it such a special place. It's all here--the lighthouses and rocky coast, the stark beauty of "The County," the sailors, fishermen, and factory workers who give our state so much color and character.
Some of these songs will make you laugh. They will have you tapping your feet and singing along. Others will send shivers down your spine and bring water to your eyes. All of them will make you proud to live in a state as beautiful and bountiful as Maine. And if you're a visitor who hasn't yet experienced all we have to offer, Steve, Chuck, and Tom will take you there--without even getting your feet wet.
So cast off. Set sail. Listen to the sounds of the sea, the gulls flapping overhead, the buoys ringing in the harbor. And let the songs of Schooner Fare be your soundtrack. You'll have a wonderful voyage. (Governor Angus King & First Lady Mary Herman = on the liner notes)
I recently heard the group perform live and they are a treat.
